Prep girls soccer: Murphy deals Granite Falls its first loss in league opener

GRANITE FALLS — Archbishop Murphy bounced back from last week’s unsettling tie to shutout previuosly unbeaten Granite Falls 5-0 Tuesday, using a variety of attacks to unravel the Tigers in the Cascade Conference battle.

If there was pressure put on Archbishop facing 2-0 Granite Falls, it was nowhere to be found.

“I just told them ‘Its your team, your game, you take care of it,’” Archbishop Murphy head coach Dick Henderson said.

Offensive midfielder Lindsey Boss did just that, putting the Wildcats on the board 20 minutes into the game with an assist from Brit Allen, giving Murphy the lead 1-0.

The Wildcats attack grew stronger in the second half as Maddy Huggins scored 56 minutes into the game off a Melissa von der Hofen pass. In the span of the next 20 minutes, Archbishop added three goals from Erin Ryan, Sam Pettinger, and Kelly Gould. Pettinger and Boss also had scoring assists.

Murphy improved to 1-0 in league play, and 2-0-1 overall. Alexa Hughes and Sarah Carratt were goalkeepers in the Wildcat victory. Granite Falls dropped to 0-1, 2-1 overall.

Cedarcrest 8, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Rachael Kevin had four goals and Maggie Plies had one goal and two assists to lead Cedarcrest (1-0 league, 2-0-1 overall) to the win in the Red Wolves’ first Cascade Conference game of the year at Sultan H.S. Erin Kearney and Brooke Chapman added goals for Cedarcrest while Kori Butterfield recorded the shutout in goal. Emily Dir started in goal for Sultan (0-1, 0-2) and was relieved by Kristal Novak in the second half.

South Whidbey 3, Lakewood 1: At Marysville, Karissa Thomas had a goal and an assist in the Cascade Conference victory at Lakewood H.S. Laurie Robinson had two goals for South Whidbey and Julie Iversen had an assist. Alicia Stott scored Lakewood’s goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Miranda Head played goalkeeper for Lakewood (0-1 league, 1-2 overall). Natasha Kamps was in goal for South Whidbey (1-0).

King’s 9, Coupeville 0: At Shoreline, Hillary Zevenbergen had two goals and three assists for King’s and teammate Kendall Thoreson had a goal and four assists in the Cascade Conference victory. Julia Crosby scored a pair of goals and Christina McCormick had a goal and an assist. Paige Johnson and Hillary Quinn both scored goals for King’s (1-0 league, 3-0 overall). Coupeville is 0-1, 0-2.

Arlington 4, Oak Harbor 0: At Arlington, Jessica Van Loo and Sadie Hitsky each had a goal and an assist for Arlington in the Wesco North game. Teresa Wadey and Kristina Longosky also added a goal apiece for the Eagles (2-1 league and overall). Chelsea Boulton got the shutout for Arlington and Jordan Boucher stood in goal for the Wildcats (0-3).

Stanwood 2, Marysville-Pilchuck 1: At Stanwood, Marysville-Pilchuck battled back and scored just three minutes into second half to cut the score 2-1 on a Kiley Thomason goal, but was unable to score again, giving Stanwood the Wesco North victory and improving its record to 1-1. Stanwood scored two goals just 16 minutes apart in the first half. Megan Douwes scored the first goal and Riley Henderson assisted on a Jenny Maley score. M-P is 0-3.

Lake Stevens 5, Cascade 1: At Everett, Kaleen Berg scored twice and had one assist for the Vikings, who improved to 3-0 league and overall. Annie Thomas had three assists to go along with Viking goals by Kinsley Isaman and Sarah Guenther. Sam Munger scored the Bruins’ (0-2-1) only goal in the first half.

Shorecrest 1, Lynnwood 0: At Shoreline, in the 78th minute, Rachel Schrote received a Sammie Gwazdauskas pass 30 yards out from Lynnwood’s goal, dribbled past one defender and sent a 15-yard kick past Amelia Martin to score the non-league game’s sole goal. Shorecrest improved to 3-0 overall. Lynnwood is 0-3.

Edmonds-Woodway 7, Mariner 0: At Edmonds, Carlin Huegli scored two goals, including the game’s first as E-W improved to 1-1-1 overall. Kaitlin Swartz added two goals and an assist for the Warriors and Mireya Saucedo scored a goal and added two assists. Alicia Garza-Hutmacher and Justine Ponton added goals and Katherine Amsden and Ponton held Mariner (0-3) scoreless.

Kamiak 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mukilteo, Cassidy Seckman, Rachel Varner and Taylor Stanley all scored goals for Kamiak in the non-league victory. Kendall Stanley had a few close shots go off the goal posts and Tana Foster recorded the shutout for the Knights (1-1-1 overall). Amy Deller was in goal for the Hawks (0-3).

Jackson 4, Glacier Peak 2: At Everett, junior captain Megan Bolmes continued her hot streak with two goals to help lead Jackson to the non-league win. Bolmes has four goals in the Timberwolves last two games. Cara Wegner and Brianna Ellis helped spearhead Jackson’s (3-0 overall) come-from-behind win with a goal apiece. Brooke Gilbert and Madison McAuliffe each had a goal for the Grizzlies (1-2). KC Wilson was the goalkeeper for the Timberwolves and Nicole Giovine handled goalkeeper duties for Glacier Peak.
