Prep football: Lake Stevens rides defense to shutout

Published 11:50 pm Friday, September 19, 2008

LAKE STEVENS — As the saying goes, defense wins championships and you can’t lose if your opponent can’t score.

Lake Stevens crushed Wesco North opponent Stanwood 35-0, giving up just 117 total yards and six first downs to the Spartans. The Vikings failed to score in the first half as the Stanwood defense also played stoutly. But Bo Dickinson made the most of a punt return — taking it 80 yards to the end zone.

The Second half went entirely the Vikings way, as Dickinson rushed for a 3-yard touchdown and quarteback Nick Baker threw three touchdowns — compiling 316 passing yards. Trevor Riecks caught TD passes of 33 and 20 yards. Brandon Tresler reeled in a 34-yard completion from Baker in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach.

Dickinson was injured in the third quarter and was taken to the hospital to undergo tests on an unreported injury.

Next week, the undefeated Vikings (1-0 league, 3-0 overall) play undefeated Arlington (1-0, 3-0) in what should be a pass-happy, high scoring display by both teams.

The Spartans fell to 0-2 overall, and 0-1 in league play.
