Prep girls swimming: M-P pulls out win with 1-2 relay finish

MARYSVILLE — When two top-notch swimming teams face each other the meet is bound to be exciting. Especially when the entire meet comes down to the last event.

That was the case in the girls swimming meet between Marysville-Pilchuck and Kamiak at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Tuesday. The Tomahawks finished 1-2 in the final event to pull out the 96-90 victory.

“Every event was so exciting ‘cause girls were just neck and neck,” M-P head coach Jackie Legore-Hodgins said. “Every race was great.”

The event came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay which was won by the M-P team of Jewel LeValley (sophomore), Kami Girard (senior), Megan Shoemaker (junior) and Kendall Vincelette (freshman), which featured a swimmer from each year of school. The team of Emily Reing, Karoline Schaufler, Leah Gordon, and Melinda Blomberg finished second to seal the win for the Tomahawks, who needed at least a 1-3 finish in the event to win the meet. Legore-Hodgins called the two relay teams’ work “pretty spectacular.”

Vincelette, a freshman, also achieved a state meet qualifying time of 1:00.79 in the 100 butterfly.

Kamiak’s Louise Moores had a state qualifying time in the 50 yard freestyle (25.44 seconds), won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.52 seconds and was on the Knights’ winning 200 freestyle relay team.

“We’re so evenly matched,” Legore-Hodgins said. “We have so much respect for Kamiak.”
