Cedarcrest breaks tie with Granite Falls

DUVALL — Illness and ejections couldn’t stop the Cedarcrest Red Wolves as they won a physical Cascade Conference contest with Granite Falls 2-0 Thursday at Cedarcrest High School.

Cedarcrest (3-1 league, 4-1-1 overall), which entered Thursday’s contest tied with Granite Falls (2-2, 4-2) for second place among Cascade Conference 2A teams, was playing without leading scorer Rachael Kevin, who was sick.

The Red Wolves also had a player receive a red card in the 72nd minute, which forced them to finish the game with 10 players. But they had already built a 2-0 lead at that point.

“Granite Falls gave us a great game,” Cedarcrest coach Denis Watts said. “They didn’t give an inch. It was a great game.”

Emily Druschba opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Maggie Pleis and Alix Combs combined on the assist.

Pleis scored the Red Wolves’ second goal in the 60th minute off an assist from Clare O’Donnell.

“She’s really quick and she’s got a lot of skill,” Watts said of Pleis, who is a freshman.

Kori Butterfield made five saves to record the shutout at goalkeeper for Cedarcrest, and Watts also lauded the play of freshman sweeper McKenna Swanson.

“She was very solid for us back there,” he said.

Coupeville 2, Sultan 0: At Coupeville, Taylor Sherman and Britt Harp each had a goal to lead Coupeville (1-4 league, 1-5 overall) to the Cascade Conference win. Goalkeeper Megan Smith recorded her first shutout of the year for Coupeville and Kristal Novak and Emily Dir split time in goal for Sultan (0-4, 0-6).

Archbishop Murphy 7, Lakewood 0: At Everett, Brittany Allen and Melissa von der Hofen each had two goals and an assist and Caroline Brawner, Alli Beard and Erin Ryan each added goals as the Wildcats (4-0 league, 5-0-1 overall) routed the Cougars (0-4, 1-5) in Cascade Conference action. Alexa Hughes and Sarah Carratt combined on the shutout for Murphy.

King’s 3, South Whidbey 0: At Shoreline, King’s goalkeeper Carolyn Dapper recorded the shutout and had a pair of assists as the Knights (4-0 league, 6-0 overall) defeated the Falcons (2-2 league and overall) in Cascade Conference action. Hillary Zevenbergen, Kendal Thoreson and Taylor Hauck scored goals for the Knights.

Everett 3, Cascade 0: At Everett, Sele Vance, Madison Taylor and Kylie Beeson each scored a goal for Everett (4-0-1 league and overall) and the Seagulls took the Wesco North victory over Cascade (1-4-1). Emily Nesting was the goalkeeper for Everett and Whitney Hawthorne stood in the net for the Bruins.

Stanwood 4, Snohomish 2: At Stanwood, Kalina Eveland scored three goals and Riley Henderson added one as the the Spartans (4-1 league and overall) defeated the Panthers (1-4) in Wesco North soccer action. Lauren Johnson and Courtney Johnson scored goals for Snohomish.

Arlington 3, Monroe 0: At Arlington, Teresa Wadey scored two goals, Macky Adell added one and Erin Taylor had a pair of assists as the Eagles (4-2 league and overall) defeated the Bearcats (2-2-1) in Wesco North action. Chelsea Boulton recorded the shutout for Arlington.

Oak Harbor 3, Marysville-Pilchuck 2 (2OT): At Oak Harbor, Hope Thompson scored the game-winner off an assist from Carson McKole as the Wildcats (1-5 league and overall) recorded their first win of the season over the Tomahawks (0-4-1). McKole added two goals in the first half for Oak Harbor.

Glacier Peak 7, Lynnwood 0: At Snohomish, Malloy Leahy scored three goals and Samantha Long added two as the Grizzlies (3-2-1 overall) defeated the Royals (0-5-1) in non-league action. Miranda Granger and Hailey Garrity also had goals for the Grizzlies, and Nicole Giovine recorded the shutout at goalkeeper.

Shorewood 10, Mariner 0: At Shoreline, the Thunderbirds (5-0-1 overall) scored early and often to blank the Marauders (0-5-1) in a non-league clash. Anastaja Norins and Louise Albin each had two goals to highlight the Shorewood offense. Ashleigh Mazrchant, Hannah Dillard, Dominique Amor, Hannah Clements, Sarah Clements and Lisa Santroch also scored for Shorewood. Goalkeepers Madison Hollenbeck and Kelsey Jang shared net duties in recording the shutout for the T-Birds.

Kamiak 0, Shorecrest 0: At Mukilteo, Shorecrest goalkeeper Caroline Towles and Kamiak goalie Tana Foster kept the game tied at 0-0 after double overtime. Shorecrest’s record is now 3-1-2 overall and Kamiak’s is 1-3-2.

Jackson 4, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Lynnwood, Megan Bolmes scored twice for Jackson (5-0-1 overall) and the Timberwolves took the non-league victory over Mountlake Terrace (0-1-0, 0-6-0). Cara Wegner and Ellen Favale each added a goal. K.C. Wilson and Kayla Beer split time in the goal for Jackson and Amy Deller was the goalkeeper for Mountlake Terrace.

Meadowdale 1, Edmonds-Woodway 0: At Edmonds, Erin Wyatt scored the only goal of the game to give Meadowdale (5-1-0 overall) the non-league victory against Edmonds-Woodway (3-2-1). Tanya Zickefoose recorded a shutout for the Mavericks.
