KENNEWICK — Meadowdale got off to a hot start and then fizzled down the stretch, finishing with a 1-2 record in the first day of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament.

Meadowdale defeated Holy Names 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-13, 25-22). Lynsey Rohrbach 15 kills and three aces. Alexa Cannon had 13 kills, 2 block kills. Mara Everth had 11 kills, 15 digs. Maddi Seeger had 15 digs, and Megan Nelson contributed 40 assists and 10 digs.

It was the first trip ever to state for Meadowdale volleyball.

“We were so thrilled to get to state, that was such a huge accomplishment,” Meadowdale head coach Machen Schrum said.

In the Mavericks’ second-round game, Blanchet blanked Meadowdale 3-0, with set scores of 25-22, 25-12, 25-15. The best Meadowdale could have done was place fourth in state after losing to Blanchet.

“They are still trying to put it to words at being in state,” Schrum said. “We came in under the radar, and the icing on the cake was to win the first match, because that is what you want to do at state.”

Meadowdale’s motto all year was “silent one”, since Meadowdale has been the sneaky assassin all year long.

“They got that feel for state, and wanted to perform and compete,” Shrum said.

However, the Mavericks lost to Mercer Island 3-1. 25-18, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, ending Meadowdale’s tournament and season.

Rohrbach and Cannon had eight kills, Nelson had 29 assists and 12 digs, and Seeger 22 digs.

Shorecrest defeated Auburn Mountainview 25-19, 25-11, 21-25, 25-23 in the first round. Lost 22-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-18, 19-17 to Lakes. The Scots finished their tournament with a loss to Mount Spokane.
