Prep roundup: Edmonds-Woodway rides emotions to win over Jackson

EDMONDS — An emotional night started strong and stayed consistent for Edmonds-Woodway in a 59-16 Western Conference South wrestling dual meet win against Jackson Thursday at Edmonds-Woodway.
Following a tribute to retiring E-W head coach Mike Hanchett and the graduating senior wrestlers, Zach Cranny earned a hard-fought 7-5 decision against Jackson’s Ryan Feiock. The match was stopped multiple times for blood — Feiock took a shot to the nose and the right side of Cranny’s forehead was cut open in two places.
“Jackson is always tough,” said Hanchett, who is retiring after 29 years in the wrestling program for E-W. “It was nice to bring the emotion of the final (home) match to fruition.”
Hanchett took over as the full-time wrestling coach in 2000 and has a number of former wrestlers in the wings to take over the coaching duties.
E-W’s 189-pounder Rudy Johanson sparked a run of four straight pins for the Warriors with his win against Sam Hering.
“Rudy (Johanson) always does a great job,” Hanchett said. “It was a little of a mismatch, but he wrestles so well.”
Johanson jumped out to a 6-1 lead with a couple takedowns and a near fall. More near falls upped Johanson’s lead before his second period pin.
Pins at 215, 285, 112 and 119 pounds pushed E-W to a commanding 33-4 lead.
Bright spots for Jackson were Jared Mead (125 pounds), junior Anthony Mortera (171) and sophomore Brennan Sanchez (135).
“You give (Jackson) an opportunity to turn around and they’ll do it to you,” Hanchett said.
E-W limited the Timberwolves opportunities to swing the meet’s momentum with solid wrestling in nearly every weight class.
“I thought Steven Alfi (145 pounds) wrestled an excellent match,” Hanchett said. “And Christian Haberman at 140 pounds did a good job.”
