Prep boys basketball: Arlington keeps pace in the playoff race

OAK HARBOR — Sometimes one tough quarter can ruin an otherwise good game.
That’s exactly what happened to the Oak Harbor boys basketball team, which was outscored 16-2 in the third quarter by Arlington in the Eagles’ 61-43 Wesco North win Tuesday.
“We stopped making plays,” Oak Harbor head coach Mike Washington said. “I think they got a little more frustrated … we stopped being patient.”
Washington had plenty of praise for Arlington’s Cole Carpenter, who finished with a game-high 17 points and six rebounds.
“He’s a solid player,” Washington said, praising Carpenter’s ability to shoot, pass and defend. He had some trouble with a 2-3 zone defense at first, but then hit two big back-to-back 3-pointers that “gave them a little bit of momentum after we had taken the lead.
“After that three they led for the rest of the night.”
Washington reserved some praise for his team, most notably freshman Mike Washington Jr., who finished with 16 points for the Wildcats.
“He pretty much kept his composure,” Washington Sr. said. He gets triple- and double-teamed, so “he earns every basket he gets.
“And I’m not just saying that cause he’s the coach’s son.”
Washington Sr. said that Oak Harbor was not going to dwell on this game, and keep their heads up going into the last few games of the season.
“We’re just going to continue to work hard and see where it takes us,” Washington Sr. said.
