Everett captures Wesco North girls golf championship

MARYSVILLE — Everett showed why it is the defending 3A District 1 champion, storming ahead of the field and winning the nine-team Wesco North meet Tuesday at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville by 26 points.

Co-medalist Stephanie Soelling (61 Stableford points), Jodi Barhanovich (60) and Talex Diede (55) led the Seagulls (254 team points), who will try to defend their district title Monday and Tuesday at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.

“You look at those three Everett girls and they just rocked,” Marysville-Pilchuck head coach Jaci Legore-Hodgins said. “They left the pack behind.”

Emily Guthrie (61) of Snohomish, which finished in second place with 228 points, was the other co-medalist and was the only golfer able to keep up with the Everett threesome.

“(Soelling and Guthrie) played in the same group,” Legore-Hodgins said. “They had the exact same score on the front nine (32) and the back nine (29). They’re both just solid players.”

Barhanovich scored 30 points on both nines, a feat Legore-Hodgins says is pretty rare.

“That doesn’t happen often,” she said.

Diede’s score of 55, good for third best for Everett, was the fourth best score overall.

“That’s awesome,” Legore-Hodgins said. “That tells you how solid Everett is.”

Legore-Hodgins’s Tomahawks (226) rounded out the top three teams. Abby Beauchamp, a sophomore, led M-P with a score of 50, good enough for eighth overall. Senior teammate Taylor Ashton finished right behind her with 49.

“That’s the best she’s ever played,” Legore-Hodgins said of Ashton.

“It was a good day for us,” she continued. “We still have a lot left in us and we’re saving it for districts.”
