MARYSVILLE — The Marysville-Pilchuck softball team used Thursday’s victory against previously-undefeated Stanwood as “extra motivation” to help the Tomahawks win their final regular season game 3-1 Friday against Cascade at Marysville-Pilchuck High School and keep its hope for a district playoff berth alive.
“Beating Stanwood added fuel to the fire,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach KT Allyn said.
With the win, the Tomahawks extended their season at least one more game. They play Monroe today at noon in a loser-out tiebreaker for the Wesco North fifth seed.
“I’m expecting (today’s) game to be exciting because we’re both winning games now at the end of our seasons,” Allyn said.
After Marysville-Pilchuck’s Riley Fritz hit an RBI single in the first inning, Cascade responded in the bottom of the inning when Megan Miller reached base on an error and scored on a fielder’s choice.
The Tomahawk’s regained the lead in the third inning when sophomore Sacha Cloe hit a single, stole second and scored on a fielding error.
“Last time we played Cascade, we were the ones that made fielding errors,” Allyn said. “This time it was their turn. They’re a good team though.”
Shortstop freshman Jessica Christensen, who batted 2-for-3, hit an RBI single in the sixth inning.
The Bruins managed to load the bases in the top of the seventh but were unable to score and a fly ball to third base ended the game.
