PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Edmonds-Woodway sweeps Woodinville

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway kicked off the 2009 volleyball season the best way it could have hoped for — with a sweep.

E-W, ranked seventh in the state in Class 4A in the Coaches’ Association poll, knocked off Woodinville 3-0 Tuesday night.

Woodinville (0-1 overall) jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first game, but Edmonds-Woodway (1-0 overall) responded, coming back to win 25-21. The Warriors then took the next two games 25-14 and 25-20.

“It was a very good match, probably one of the best first matches I’ve ever been a part of,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Mike Pittis said. “It was 3-0, but it was a touch match.”

Freshman Miah Diirell had nine kills and three aces for E-W.

“We have a game ball that they decorate, she got the game ball tonight,” Pittis said of the freshman. “She’s a really good kid and she’s got a good understanding of the game.”

Pittis said Diirell has got a good jump serve, which she displayed closing out the first and second games.

Haley Scott had nine kills and five assists, Leigh Fishback had 18 assists and Hannah Lauber had seven kills and two aces for E-W. All three girls are seniors and going into their third year on varsity.

Shorecrest 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, Casey Axelson had 25 assists to help lead Shorecrest (1-0 overall) to a 25-10, 25-18, 27-25 non-conference win. Brenna Lofquist had 11 kills for the Scots and Laura Postor had 21 digs for Shorewood (0-1). Hannah Stoeve added five kills and five blocks for the Thunderbirds.

Lynnwood 3, Mariner 0: At Lynnwood, The Royals’ shutout non-league victory came with the help of Laycee Hill’s 15 assists, Jessica Barlow’s 16 kills and Mokum Fajemisin’s seven blocks and nine kills to win 25-18, 25-14, 25-16. Alee Bryan had six kills, Katelyn Kelly had 11 digs and Angela Stewart had six aces.

Monroe 3, Everett 0: At Everett, Monroe took all three games by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 30-28. Kendal Munoz had 30 assists and 14 digs, Megan Birch had 12 kills and Meagan McPhetridge had nine kills and 12 digs for Monroe (1-0 overall). Jody Barhanovich had 14 digs, Emily Liger and seven kills and eight digs, Molly Burton had five kills and two aces and Rachel Peterson had four kills for Everett (0-1 overall) in the non-league match.

Lake Stevens 3, Stanwood 0: At Stanwood, Lake Stevens took all three games by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-18. Ysabella Liccardi had 10 kills for Lake Stevens (1-0 overall). Sarah Titus had 14 digs for Stanwood (0-1 overall) in the non-league match.

Oak Harbor 3, Cascade 2: At Oak Harbor, Oak Harbor defeated Cascade in the non-league match by scores of 30-28, 25-19, 15-25, 23-25 and 15-10. Esther No had 12 digs, Kaitie Brush had 12 kills and six blocks, Danielle Love had six kills, Chelsea Nelson had 15 assists and three blocks and Becca Holtgeerts had five aces for Cascade (0-1 overall). Melany Cone had 35 assists, Marisa Sutherland had 11 kills, Katelyn Bristow had six kills and Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley had six aces for Oak Harbor (1-0 overall).

Ferndale 3, Arlington 1: At Ferndale, Arlington won the first game 25-20, but Ferndale won three straight with scores of 25-18, 25-8, and 25-21 in the non-conference opener. The Eagles’ Karissa Scarth had eight kills, Melissa Webb had 16 assists and 13 digs, and Kristin Wright had 19 digs.

Shoreline Christian 3, Seattle Lutheran 0: At Shoreline, Shoreline Christian benefited from 23 service aces in a 25-15, 25-7, 25-11 non-conference win. Shoreline Christian (1-0 overall) senior Laura Kredit had 14 service aces and fellow senior setter Anne Marie Visser had 10 assists, six kills and four digs. Seattle Lutheran’s record is 0-1.

Darrington 3, Rainier Christian 2: At Auburn, Darrington defeated Rainier Christian (0-1 overall) by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 14-25, 25-19 and 15-9. Caresse Baker had 12 kills, Hailey Wales had 10 kills, Kolby Fanning had 29 assists and Randi Wales had five aces for Darrington (1-0 overall).

North Sound Christian 3, Skykomish 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Maylisa Chung had 19 assists and Emily Wiederspan recorded eight digs for North Sound Christian in a 25-10, 25-12, 25-15 Northwest 1B League win. Chantelle Meeks had 10 kills, seven digs and five service aces for North Sound Christian (1-0 overall and league). Skykomish is 0-1, 0-1.
