PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Glacier Peak gets defensive against Lake Stevens
Published 11:38 pm Friday, September 11, 2009
LAKE STEVENS — With its spread offense attack, Glacier Peak’s offensive prowess was never in doubt.
It’s defense? That’s another question.
But after giving up 51 points last week — albeit in a winning effort — the Grizzlies clamped down on Lake Stevens Friday night, shutting the Vikings out in the second half en route to a 27-10 win in a non-league clash.
Glacier Peak intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and recovered it, and recorded a safety all in the second half to pull away with the win.
“This week in practice we simplified things on the defensive side,” Glacier Peak head coach Rory Rosenbach said. “We just let the kids go out and play defense.”
Maybe the biggest defensive stand came shortly after halftime. Trailing 19-10 and Glacier Peak knocking on the door of the end zone, Lake Stevens turned things around in a hurry. Vikings linebacker Alex Moon intercepted Grizzlies quarterback Zach Richter and returned it to the Grizzlies’ 16-yard line. But Glacier Peak’s defense moved Lake Stevens back on three straight plays, forcing the Vikings to take a 37-yard field goal, which was botched when the snap was low and the holder failed to handle it.
On the offensive side, Glacier Peak was up to its old tricks. Led by Richter, who completed 18 of 37 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns, the Grizzlies threw the ball all over the field. Tanner Southard caught six passes for 93 yards, including one for a touchdown, and Jack Bonner caught five passes for 101 yards.
Bonner also contributed on the defensive side. With Lake Stevens threatening, Bonner drifted back and picked off a pass by Lake Stevens quarterback Bryson Daggett inside the Glacier Peak 10-yard-line late in the third quarter, all but sealing the game.
