Prep roundup: Everett still perfect in boys tennis

SNOHOMISH — Six games into the season and the Everett boys tennis team is plowing its way through the Wesco North.

The Seagulls preserved their perfect record Monday afternoon, defeating conference rival Snohomish 5-2 to improve to 6-0 on the season.

“It’s been a really fun year so far,” Tim Boyd, Everett’s head coach said. “I have a really good group of kids and they’ve done a good job so far of staying focused.”

Everett swept all four singles matches, with the No. 4 match being the only one to go to three sets.

Sophomore Lucas Henry, who spent last year on the junior varsity team, won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 4-6. He came out strong in the deciding set, defeating Garat Grant 6-1 to close the match.

“He’s come up (from JV),” Boyd said, “really improved a lot over the summer and has done really well.”

“When you play Snohomish it’s always tough,” Boyd said. “They’re a real competitive, real tough team. That was something big for us to sweep the singles.”

The other impressive performance came from the No. 1 doubles team of Evan Ebert and Nguyen Tong, who defeated Snohomish’s Jared Anderson and Zack Martin 7-6 (7-2 in the tiebreaker), 0-6, 6-4 to put the Seagulls up for good in the match.

“That was one that ended up deciding the match for us,” Boyd said. “No. 4 singles and doubles were playing at the time.”

Snohomish’s (3-3) Luke and Zak Martinson won at No. 2 doubles and Garrett Dmochousky and Tim Ellis (No. 3 doubles) also prevailed. All three doubles matches went to three sets.

Now that the Seagulls have remained perfect through six games, does an unbeaten season ever cross their minds?

“I think we all think about it,” Boyd said, “and I know the kids are excited and feel they can do that. I try more to go game by game. There are a lot of good teams out there and you gotta do your best everytime.”
