PREP ROUNDUP: Doubles teams help Edmonds-Woodway win tennis meet

EDMONDS — A little extra depth helped propel Edmonds-Woodway past a key Wesco South rival on Friday.

The Warriors can thank their doubles teams for the victory.

After splitting the singles matches 2-2, the Warriors swept all three doubles matches to defeat Shorewood 5-2 Friday at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

“Shorewood is always a good team,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Crist said. “We lost to Jackson earlier (this week), if we’d lost to these guys we would have started out 0-2 (in conference). I don’t think they wanted to start the season that way.”

Edmonds-Woodway improved to 1-1 in league and 7-2 overall, while Shorewood — usually a Wesco South tennis power — fell to the same record.

The E-W No. 2 doubles team of Alex Fredrickson and Will Henson won a close tiebreaker 7-5 in their first set to pull out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory, and the No. 3 doubles team of Matt Stepenski and Alex Marier secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory to lock up the win.

“It really came down to the doubles,” Crist said. “The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams, both first sets were close, and both 3 and 2 teams stepped up and won going away.”

Shorewood was led by No. 1 singles seed Scott McConnell, and No. 2 seed Sam Smith, who each won their respective matches.
