PREP ROUNDUP: Second-quarter surge boosts Glacier Peak

SNOHOMISH — It may not be easy for teams to play games around the holidays when they are on Christmas vacation. But it was no problem for the Glacier Peak Grizzlies boys basketball team on Tuesday as it defeated Juanita 74-52.

Juanita jumped to a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Glacier Peak responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Rebels 21-6.

“We started a little slow,” Glacier Peak coach Brian Hunter said. “Giving up 17 points in the first quarter wasn’t our goal by any means.”

Hunter said the Grizzlies’ energy picked up in the second quarter, and so did their aggressiveness.

“We started attacking the basket,” Hunter said.

Eight of the nine players who played in the game for the Grizzlies scored and three players scored in double figures. Brandon Hill led the Grizzlies with 19 points, while Jack Bonner chipped in 16 and Nick Persha had 15. Payton Pervier scored seven points, blocked six shots and grabbed seven rebounds for Glacier Peak and Bonner had two steals three assists and five rebounds.

Hunter wasn’t surprised at the Grizzlies balanced scoring. “I think that is something that we have had all year,” he said.
