PREP ROUNDUP: Freshman ignites Edmonds-Woodway wrestlers
Published 11:07 pm Wednesday, January 13, 2010
EDMONDS — For Matthew Cuzzetto, technical expertise will come later. He is a freshman after all.
But the 125-pound Edmonds-Woodway wrestler — mentored by more advanced wrestlers and three seniors — has taken a liking to winning. His 18-3 technical fall over Greg Dellino sparked a run of five-straight bout wins for the Warriors in a 62-13 Wesco South win over Glacier Peak Wednesday night at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
Cuzzetto, who was coming off a tournament win at the Edmonds Invitational, handled himself calmly in the win and helped keep the Warriors undefeated in the Wesco North.
E-W head coach Joe Trieu likes how the Warriors are peaking at just the right time.
“Coming in a freshman is really difficult, but he has such great wrestlers around him,” Trieu said, “and with them pushing each other it will be nice to see how it all shakes out.”
Captain Stefan Carlson scored a 7-0 decision over Timmy Douglass at 135 pounds, Carlson’s sixth straight win.
“The light and fire just turned on,” Trieu said with excitement. “He won his sixth match in a row, I mean he is on fire, his family is just stoked. He is wrestling solid, and getting more confidence.”
Trieu also likes the path the team is on, and feels that the Warriors are gaining momentum for the last stretch of the season.
“The season is coming along really well, at so many different levels of our team,” Trieu said. “They have been working hard, they are progressing really well, even on the academic side. We don’t have one ineligible wrestler.”
