PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: South Whidbey headed to 2A district
Published 11:44 pm Friday, February 19, 2010
LANGLEY — It was a good night for the South Whidbey boys basketball team.
Not only did the Falcons clinch a 2A District 1 playoff berth on Friday with a 64-57 win against Lakewood but they did it in front of their family and friends on senior night at South Whidbey High School.
After a rocky first quarter in the Cascade Conference game, South Whidbey pulled it together to lead by one at halftime.
“They had some senior night jitters,” said South Whidbey coach Christ Ferrier. “The guys were a little too excited and hyped up but they played good defense and settled down.”
Lakewood pulled within two points early in the fourth quarter before South Whidbey went on a 7-0 run to seal the win. A strong showing from the free-throw line (13-for-14) in the final quarter also helped boost the Falcons into the playoffs.
Cole Erikson and Jordan Thornley led South Whidbey with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
“They’re both tremendous leaders and hit good shots at the right time tonight,” said Ferrier.
South Whidbey’s Riley Newman led all scorers with 20 points. Tre Haslom scored a team-high 18 points for Lakewood.
South Whidbey begins its playoff journey with a 7 p.m. game Friday at the Northwest League No. 2 seed.
Lakewood quest for a playoff berth continues when it hosts a play-in game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
