PREP ROUNDUP: Grizzlies eliminate Mavs

SNOHOMISH — Glacier Peak girls basketball coach Brian Hill was feeling bittersweet after Tuesday night’s game against Meadowdale.

For him and his Grizzlies, it was a back-and-forth 62-60 3A District 1 girls basketball tournament win at Glacier Peak high school that tasted so sweet. The hard part for Hill was seeing the Meadowdale Mavs stunned, walking in a daze knowing that their season suddenly came to a halt with the loss.

“Its sad cause both teams are so great,” Hill said. “It was hard to have to play each other and send someone home, it was hard to see us celebrating and them crying … Both teams left it all on the floor.”

Katie Hawkins scored a game-high 23 points with four 3-pointers, and Olivia VanDlac chipped in 14 points, allowing Glacier Peak to continue its quest for a state berth against Ferndale at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Glacier Peak High School. The winner will clinch the final seed, the loser’s season will be over.

The Grizzlies struggled to contain the dribble-penetration of Julia Fjortoft (21 points) and Margreet Barhoum (17 points) penetrating into the zone, and went down 11 points in the third quarter after a 10-0 Meadowdale run.

But GP crawled back, and Hill said the Grizzlies “made the ones we needed to” at the foul line in the fourth quarter, shooting 5-for-7 from the line.

“We were able to stop the bleeding and come back,” Hill said. “Katie Hawkins was able to keep her composure and knock down some big shots.

“I thought both teams just played a phenomenal game, it was just too bad that someone had to lose.”
