PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Cedarcrest scores 3 late runs to stay unbeaten

Published 11:07 pm Wednesday, March 31, 2010

DUVALL — It wasn’t easy and it took some last-inning heroics, but Cedarcrest is still perfect.

The Red Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, matching the three runs South Whidbey scored in the top half of the inning, to come from behind and win a Cascade Conference game 11-10 Wednesday to improve to 8-0 in league and overall this season.

“We’re a pretty experienced team,” Cedarcrest head coach Scott Goldsberry said. “We let the kids do it themselves and they definitely came through.”

After the top half of the inning, the Red Wolves, who are the defending 2A state champions, found themselves trailing 10-8. Daniel Porter started the fireworks early, leading off the seventh with a solo home run.

Jordan Gross and Mark Bishop had back-to-back base hits, which set up the opportunity for a sacrifice bunt.

The throw to first base sailed into right field and Goldsberry “just kept waving them home.” Bishop scored the game-winning run all the way from first and the game was over.

“Porter leading off the inning with the home run was probably the key that really fired everybody up,” Goldsberry said. “Our kids were really pumped up. We were basically staring our first loss of the season right in the face. I really think they just believed they were going to win, that they were supposed to win, and that’s what we want them to believe … that they’re going to pull it out and win the game.”

Porter finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and the home run. Jansen Woelz had a 2-for-4 performance and Gross was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

South Whidbey (3-2, 5-2) was led by Robert Kirby (4-for-5) who scored three runs, hit two doubles and finished with three RBI. The Falcons’ lone pitcher of the day, TJ Fallon, had a good day at the plate (3-for-5, a double and four RBI) to go along with his complete game on the mound.

“South Whidbey played a heck of a game,” Goldsberry said. “They battled it out straight to the end.

“Just a wild and crazy game. That’s it.”
