PREP BOYS ROUNDUP: Groves leads Kamiak to baseball win

EDMONDS — When Kamiak’s Andrew Groves took the mound, Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Somoza knew his team was facing one of the Wesco South’s most complete pitchers.
Groves pitched five innings and the Knights got timely two-out hits and a solid defensive performance to notch a tough 8-4 league win against conference co-leader Edmonds-Woodway Tuesday night. Both teams are now 2-1 in league, 4-1 overall.
Kamiak got two runs in the first and two more in the third, both aided by Warriors errors for an early 4-0 lead. Three more runs in the fourth inning made it 7-0 and E-W had dug itself too deep of a hole.
“Going down that much against Groves is a recipe for disaster,” Somoza said. “Kamiak came out really good and Groves is probably the best pitcher in the league, so its hard to come back against him.”
Groves mixed in offspeed pitches to contrast his fastball and had effective pitch location. Somoza called him “the complete package.”
Senior catcher Jared Houghtaling batted 2-for-2 with three RBI, Jake Sortor and Seth Heck each batted 2-for-4 and Chris Guinn was 2-for-3, accounting for the majority of Kamiak’s hits.
“He (Houghtaling) had clutch hits,” Somoza said, later aatributing the Knights’ success to “a bunch of clutch two-out hits.”
Blaine Liukko led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a solo home run in the seventh inning.
