LANGLEY — South Whidbey head coach Joel Gerlach remembers being impressed by the skill set possessed by 8-year-old Noah Moeller.

Moeller, now a South Whidbey junior forward, impressed his coach again when he gave the Falcons a 1-0 Cascade Conference boys soccer win over Archbishop Murphy Tuesday and sole possession of first place in the conference.

Moeller scored in the 50th minute when the Archbishop Murphy goalkeeper bobbled a shot and the 5-foot-7 forward headed the rebound over the keeper and into the goal.

“Just sheer determination,” Gerlach said of the goal. “… He’s (Moeller) phenomenal. I get the feeling he’s going to be an all-conference player this year.”

T.J. Russell, who recorded 15 saves in goal, and the South Whidbey defense helped maintain the lead for a tense final 30 minutes.

“He made some incredible saves,” Gerlach said of Russell, also giving accolades to his four defenders — Henry Mead, Dean Freundlich, Eli Berndt and Ben Covelli.

Archbishop Murphy (4-2-0 league, 4-3-0 overall) came close with a shot in the 60th minute across the goal mouth. The shot from the right side was deflected by Russell before striking the far upright.

“We only scored the one goal and we had to hold them off and mainain that goal for 30 minutes,” Gerlach said. “We realized that it was a really evenly matched (game) … we maintained and this was the best game they’ve played so far this year.”

The Falcons (5-1-0, 5-2-0) grabbed the top spot in the Cascade Conference and Gerlach, in his sixth-year as head coach, expects good results from a squad with eight juniors, including Moeller and Russell.
