PREP SOCCER/TENNIS ROUNDUP: Shootout win sends Cedarcrest to district

DUVALL— It took a last ditch effort but Cedarcrest got the goal that it needed most — a 78th minute score that sent the Cascade Conference game with Coupeville to overtime.

Once they extended the game, the Red Wolves survived overtime and won in a shootout for a 3-2 win that guarantees them a spot in the 2A District 1 playoffs.

Trailing 2-1 as time wound down, Cedarcrest coach Zack Pittis moved Ingbar Judson from his sweeper position to forward in a push for the final goal.

“We took a chance and threw him up front,” Pittis said. “What the heck. It paid off.”

In the 78th minute, Judson chipped a shot over Coupeville (7-6 league, 8-7 overall) keeper Issac Wacker for the equalizer.

Colin McHargue sealed the game for Cedarcrest (8-5, 8-7) in the 4-3 shootout, saving two Coupeville attempts and scoring on his own penalty kick. The win lifts the Red Wolves to 3-0 in shootouts.

Coupeville’s Tony Jensen got the scoring going quickly in the fifth minute with an assist from Spencer Tack. CJ Mowry tied the game three minutes later thanks to a pass from Tyler Rodgers. Justin Adams’ unassisted goal in the 48th minute gave Coupeville the 2-1 edge.

The victory was payback for the Red Wolves, who lost at Coupeville in the teams’ previous meeting on a game-winner with seconds to go in the second overtime period.

“Guys wanted to get back for that one,” Pittis said. “We had a bad taste in our mouth.”

Lakewood 3, Sultan 1: At Marysville, Lakewood tacked on three goals after Sultan took an early 1-0 lead and Sam Johnston kept Lakewood at bay from his goalkeeper position for the Cascade Conference win. In the 27th minute, Brian Ordonez scored unassisted for Sultan. The Cougars got three unassisted goals with Taylor Fellows scoring in the 39th minute, Joseph Hawkins in the 58th minute and Mason Brisbon off a free kick from 35 yards out in the 74th minute. Lakewood is now 6-7 in league, 6-9 overall. Sultan (3-10, 3-12) had Clayton Knoles in goal.
