Published 9:25 am Friday, April 30, 2010

DUVALL — Archbishop Murphy’s baseball bats stayed hot after a series-opening win over Cedarcrest on Monday.

Wednesday’s contest at Cedarcrest High School was the same story on a different day as Archbishop Murphy pounded out a 14-3 Cascade Conference victory to set up a Friday winner-take-all matchup for the regular season conference championship.

Jon Varriano hit an RBI double and Jake Hines singled in another run in the second inning as the Wildcats (15-2 league, 15-3 overall) grabbed a 9-0 lead after three innings.

Starting pitcher Kevin Waldron had six strikeouts and added a two-run home run to left-center field in the third inning for Archbishop Murphy.

Waldron finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and increased his record on the mound to 5-1 overall.

Gunnar Swanson hit an RBI double in the fourth inning as Cedarcrest (15-2, 15-3) crawled back to close the gap to 9-3 after six innings, but the Wildcats tacked on five more insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Hines finished 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a home run after striking out three times in Monday’s 14-4 win for the Wildcats.

Varriano finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and catcher Chris Peterson, who had hit a home run in four straight games, was 1-for-5 with a double.

“They’re hitting the ball, we’re not,” Cedarcrest head coach Scott Goldsberry said. “They’re doing all the things they need to do to win games, we’re not.”

Friday’s 4 p.m. winner-take-all game is at Archbishop Murphy High School.
