Published 5:20 pm Monday, May 3, 2010
When it comes to running fast and jumping far, the Oak Harbor girls track and field team is tough to beat.
Oak Harbor won the Clash of the Counties meet Friday at Mount Vernon High. Fueled by standouts like Naomi Walker, Adrianna Royal and Shantae Young, Oak Harbor scored 35 points and edged Arlington (34 points) in the eight-team competition that also included Stanwood, Marysville-Pilchuck, Burlington-Edison, Sedro-Woolley, Mount Vernon and Anacortes.
Walker, a freshman sprinter, placed first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.95 seconds and 26.36 seconds, and was a member of Oak Harbor’s first-place 400 relay (50.59). She also was runnerup in the long jump.
It’s been a stellar spring for the fleet freshman, whose season-best times in the 100 (12.32) and 200 (25.69) lead the Western Conference North Division, according to Athletic.net. Walker also helped Oak Harbor clock a 49.74 last month in the 400 relay, best in the North this season.
Oak Harbor’s other Clash of the Counties standouts included Royal (first in the 1,600, second in the 800) and Young (first in triple jump, third in long jump, member of winning 400 relay). Royal, a junior, is ranked No. 2 in the North in the 800 (2:21.82) and the 1,600 (5:18.79). Young, a senior, is the division’s top-ranked long-jumper (18 feet, 3.5 inches) and triple-jumper (37-0.5).
Oak Harbor will be one of several strong teams at next week’s Wesco North Division Championships. The two-day meet is May 12 and May 14 at Arlington High.
