PREP ROUNDUP: Glacier Peak bags top seed to 3A district baseball

Published 5:01 pm Friday, May 7, 2010

SNOHOMISH — Behind solid pitching by Nate Ristoff and Cameron Stevie, Glacier Peak defeated Kamiak 6-3 Thursday at home to clinch the Wesco 3A top seed heading into the District 1 playoffs.

After finishing last among Wesco 3A teams last season, the squad, featuring largely the same cast, rebounded to a 10-8 league record.

“I think more than the No. 1 seed, it felt really good to be the highest finishing 3A team when we were the lowest finishing team last year with largely the same group of kids,” Glacier Peak head coach Bob Blair said. “Just coming back from that with the same group of guys, it’s really good for them to experience some success and take that into the playoffs.”

The Grizzlies fell behind Kamiak 2-1 entering the third inning. It was in that inning that Ristoff came on in relief and shut down the Knights and the offense responded with a five-run outburst that provided more than enough run support for Ristoff and Stevie, who relieved Ristoff in the sixth.

The Grizzlies were able to string five hits in a row, including a David Yagi go-ahead single after a passed ball allowed the tying run to score. The single gave Glacier Peak a 4-2 lead.

“(Ristoff) did well,” Blair said. “He has been our most consistent relief pitcher … We were very confident that when he came in he could hold the lead.”

Ristoff did that, notching his third win of the season, and Stevie earned the save.
