PREP ROUNDUP: Arlington tennis team snaps Snohomish streak
Published 10:03 pm Thursday, September 16, 2010
Defeating Cascade last week seemed to be a tremendous feat for the Arlington boys tennis team.
But a win against Snohomish which snapped a 38-meet win streak?
Arlington accomplished its first win over Snohomish in school history, 5-2 Wednesday at Snohomish High sSchool, where the Panthers have not lost in three years.
The Eagles improved their record to 3-2 in conference and overall, with the Panthers falling to 3-1.
“I told the kids ‘This is our shot, we have to take it,’” Arlington coach Sean Cunningham said. “To beat Snohomish and Cascade on the road back-to-back is huge, and we are just aiming to be one of the top tennis teams this year. This is real big for our program.”
Ari Fernando and Eric Mcelroy took the first and second singles matches to give Arlington a 2-0 advantage, and Marty Thordarson won at No. 4 singles for a 3-1 lead heading into doubles play.
Cunningham said that the tandems of Josiah Aylesworth/David Taft-Ferrin (6-2, 6-3) and Matt Peiffle/Brent Thompson (7-5, 7-5) played extremely gritty, with each team winning its last three matches in a row.
“They just whooped us,” Snohomish coach Dick Jansen said. “They came right at us … They did a hell of a job.
“Its like a no-hitter, no one wants to talk about it (the winning streak).”
