Prep Notebook: Volleyball teams raise money to fight cancer

More teams will dig for a cure this year.
For the fourth consecutive season, the Cascade and Everett high school volleyball teams will increase awareness about breast cancer, honor cancer survivors and raise money for cancer research. It’s all part of the annual Bruins versus Seagulls Dig for the Cure match, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. tonight at Everett’s Norm Lowery Gymnasium.
Other Western Conference volleyball teams are joining the cause. Tonight’s Shorewood at Lake Stevens and Jackson at Stanwood matches, and Thursday’s Glacier Peak at Monroe and Marysville-Pilchuck at Kamiak matches will all include fundraising activities aimed at fighting cancer or other life-threatening diseases. Those matches also start at 7 p.m.
Stanwood will raise money for senior Maranda Hansen, a Spartans’ middle blocker who suffers from cystic fibrosis, Stanwood coach Erik Titus said.
At all the matches, proceeds from T-shirt sales and other fundraising activities — including a quilt auction and bake sale at the Cascade-Everett event — will be donated to support the respective causes.
After hearing about the past three Cascade-Everett Dig for the Cure events, many local coaches expressed interest in creating their own fundraiser.
“Everybody jumped on board and wanted to be a part of it,” Everett coach Heather McLeod said, “so it’s really exciting.”
McLeod praised H&L Sports of Everett, which coordinated the design and sale of T-shirts.
“Now that we’re four years into this, I think we have it down,” said McLeod, “and it will be bigger and better than last year.”
