STANWOOD — Jackson came out firing and held off a resilient Stanwood volleyball team to win a nonconference game in straight sets, 25-16, 25-21, 26-24 Tuesday night at Stanwood High School.

“That whole group impresses me,” Spartans’ head coach Erik Titus said of Jackson’s squad. “They’re pretty darn good. They’re really steady with what they do.”

Emmy Allen had 13 kills and 11 digs and Miah Diirell had 10 kills to lead the Timberwolves (4-0 overall).

“You cannot afford to give up points,” Titus said. “They do enough things right. You don’t need to help them a bit.”

Stanwood (1-2) kept the final set close, behind 20-21 at one point. But after exchanging scores, Jackson went on a run and closed out the victory.

Sarah Titus had 12 digs for the Spartans, who take on Mariner Thursday before beginning Wesco 4A North play next week against Monroe (3-0) and Marysville-Pilchuck (2-0).

“We don’t get any easy ones to start out with,” Erik Titus said. “This was very, very good (competition). Our kids want to play at that level too.”

Stanwood, along with many other local teams, participated in Dig for the Cure, a special event to raise money for cancer research.

“One of our players, Maranda Hansen, has cystic fibrosis, so our money’s going to go toward the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” Titus said. Titus estimated, 300 spectators attended the event, and said he “would be shocked if our dollar total wasn’t in the 1,000 to 1,500 dollar range.”

“It was a little different to see the Stanwood players in a pink shirt,” Titus confessed. “It was kind of a neat evening and a way to draw attention to something that’s going to affect everyone in one way or another.”
