PREP ROUNDUP: Stanwood leapfrogs Tommies

MARYSVILLE — Stanwood came into Friday’s boys tennis match against Marysville-Pilchuck in fifth place in the Wesco North just a half game behind the Tomahawks. After it’s 5-2 win, the Spartans had leapfrogged M-P into fourth place, leading the Tomahawks by a half game.

“There were a lot of close matches, but they all pretty much went their way,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Robert Sherry said.

Sherry said that the No.2 singles match between Chris Gilmore and Shane Price stood out. Gilmore led 3-0 in the second set, before Price came back to win the set in a tiebreaker.

But Gilmore, in his first year playing singles, was resilent. He rebounded to win the third set and the match 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

“He had to come back and get focused,” Stanwood coach Trudi Abrams said.

“I think Chris Gilmore played a really good match,” Sherry said.

Gilmore’s victory also sealed the match for Stanwood.

“He is a really intelligent kid and he plays tennis that way too,” Abrams said.

Abrams said that finishing second and being the top 4A team in the Wesco North are both goals for the Spartans this season, but she says, “there is still a long ways to go.”

“All the teams are pretty much at the same level except Everett is pretty tough this year,” Abrams added.

Boys soccer

Shoreline Christian 3, Evergreen Lutheran 2: At Shoreline, Travis Hudson scored goals in the 20th minute (Keith Jacobs assist) and the 45th minute to lead Shoreline Christian to the non-conference win. Jacobs also scored in the 29th minute (Hudson) for Shoreline Christian (4-2-1 overall).

Volleyball

Skykomish 3, Lummi 1: At Skykomish, Skykomish (2-4 league, 3-4 overall) defeated Lummi (2-4, 2-4) in Northwest 1B action by scores of 25-12, 12-25, 25-20 and 27-25. Rachel Partner was 16-for-17 serving with six aces and two kills and Rebecca Ramsey was 19-for-21 serving with four aces for Skykomish.

Lopez Island 3, Highland Christian 0: At Lopez Island, the Lobos defeated Highland Christian with set scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 in the Northwest 1B contest, with Lopez remaining undefeated at 5-0 in league. Esther Brown had five aces and five kills for Highland Christian (1-4, 1-5).
