LAKE STEVENS — Monroe senior outside hitter Megan Birch had 11 kills and 13 digs to help the Bearcats stay undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 Wesco North win over Lake Stevens Wednesday night at Lake Stevens High School.

Birch teamed with junior Meagan McPhetridge and sophomore setter Kendal Munoz to give Monroe a 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 win.

McPhetridge finished with 12 kills and eight blocks and Munoz dished out 27 assists.

“It was pretty close,” Lake Stevens head coach Amy Wiklund said. “They (Monroe) beat us mentally tonight badly — got in our heads and played good volleyball.”

The win helps Monroe stay atop the Wesco North standings with a 4-0 league record, the Bearcats are 9-1 overall.

Lake Stevens’ (3-2, 6-5) junior Brooke Larsen had eight kills, senior outside hitter Miranda Shultz had seven kills and 5-foot-2 libero Brooke DalGleish had 10 digs.

“They (Monroe) did a good job of putting the ball where we were weak,” Wiklund said. “Unfortunately we didn’t step up like we should have.”

Wiklund said the Vikings stayed with Monroe with a good serve-receive game, but faltered on their own half of the court.

“We played serve-receive really well, (Monroe) didn’t serve us off the court, our defense could have been stronger,” Wiklund said. “(Monroe) played really smart.”
