Glacier Peak boys fall to Seattle Prep

MARYSVILLE — The Glacier Peak Grizzlies quickly overcame a bad start Friday night, but they couldn’t recover from Seattle Prep’s big third quarter. And if the Grizzlies are going to make a second straight trip to the Tacoma Dome, they’ll need one more win today to get there.

After erasing an early deficit to lead at halftime, Glacier Peak fell behind quickly in the second half and couldn’t recover as Seattle Prep held on for a 56-52 state regional victory. The win sends the Panthers (22-5) to the state quarterfinals, and puts the Grizzlies (21-4) in a winner-to-state, loser-out game against Hazen at 3 p.m. today at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Seattle Prep jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game as Glacier Peak failed to score in the game’s first four minutes. But the Grizzlies answered right back with a 10-0 run of their own, and a game that started off looking like a blowout was tied after one quarter.

Glacier Peak, which had won 15 in a row before Friday, built a five-point halftime lead thanks in large part to Dylan Vargas’ eight second-quarter points. But Prep answered with 21 third-quarter points, including 12 from leading scorer Mitch Brewe, who was shutout in the first half. Glacier Peak was able to get within two points three different times in the fourth quarter, but was never able to tie or take the lead.

Tanner Southard led the Grizzlies with 16 points and six rebounds, and Vargas added 12 points.
