Stanwood, Monroe win Envirothon
The Stanwood High School Envirothon Team No. 1 placed first last month at the Northwest Regional Envirothon.
The competition was held at Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Skagit County and was sponsored by Skagit Conservation District.
The contest challenges students on their knowledge of soils, wildlife, forestry, aquatics and environmental issues.
Members of the overall top-scoring Stanwood team are: Jacob Flake, Thor Pearson, Aaron Olson, Leif Small and Brandon Nickels.
A team from Sky Valley Environmental Education Program in Monroe took second place.
Both teams earned the right to compete at the state level in May.
Local students take part in science fair
Students from Snohomish and Island counties were among the 465 people competing at the 54th annual State Science and Engineering Fair.
The fair was held April 1 and 2 in Bremerton. Local students included:
Christian Heinzig, Terrace Park Elementary School, first place for “Balls in Motion Have Energy.”
Justin Heinzig, Terrace Park Elementary School, first place and Museum of Flight special award for “Design, Build and Use of a Low Velocity Wind Tunnel.”
Danielle Johnsen, Oak Heights Elementary, first place for “Up, Up and Away.”
Anisha Mulumudi, Soundview Private School, first place for “Titanic: What Makes Objects Float.”
Arlington students’ movies in festival
Video production students from Arlington High School submitted three short films this winter to the Guerilla Film Festival at the Pickford Film Center in Bellingham.
Callon Bigger, Jose Ruiz and Alex Hills steered the making of “How T9 Ruined my Life.” A team of 12 students participated in the creative effort, earning second place in the audience choice category.
Jake Musga, Hailey Jarvis and Kiley Smith also created the film “Bully Task Force.” Nick Nelson, Kevin Rasanen, Josh Robinson and Rudy Valenzuela produced “I Was a Teenage Superhero.”
The films were screened again in March at the Pickford Film Center.
Everett student on Gonzaga honors list
Kelsey Stoeser of Everett made the president’s list for the fall semester at Gonzaga University.
The list requires students to earn a minimum 3.7 GPA for a semester.
Stoeser is a 2009 graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School.
