Wildlife refuge plan
A plan to create a wildlife refuge along the bank of the Snohomish River is the subject of a meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
The meeting of the Snohomish Parks Board is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Snohomish Boys &Girls Club, 402 Second St.
The city, working with the Pilchuck Audubon Society, is considering setting aside a city-owned parcel along the north bank of the Snohomish River on both sides of Highway 9 for wildlife habitat and public viewing.

Sports park meeting: Snohomish County has scheduled a meeting at the end of the month to discuss the master planning process for a proposed sports park at the former Wellington Hills Golf Course.
The meeting is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Brightwater Education and Community Center, 22509 Highway 9, Maltby.
The county bought the 100-acre Wellington Hills property from the University of Washington last year and closed the nine-hole golf course in the fall. Conceptual plans call for lighted ballfields, walking trails and a mountain-biking area.
Rainier’s early history: Archaeologist Greg Burtchard plans discuss research at Mount Rainier National Park that indicates people have used the mountain’s alpine and subalpine areas for thousands of years.
He will summarize the mountain’s archaeological record in a 2 p.m. talk Saturday at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, 319 Second Ave. S., in the Pioneer Square historic district. The event is free and open to the public. For more information please call 206-220-4240.
