Port Angeles chimney stack demolition proves tough

PORT ANGELES — The demolition of a 175-foot-tall chimney stack on the former Peninsula Plywood mill site in Port Angeles didn’t exactly go smoothly.
The 1,000-ton smokestack was tougher than it looked.
The Peninsula Daily News reported that nothing happened when a crew detonated explosives at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
The newspaper said engineers decided the stack was being held up by a web of steel rebar inside the tower. So the next plan was to use huge electrical saws to cut through the rebar.
Finally, at 6:15 p.m. Monday, the smokestack fell, kicking up a cloud of dust.
The 19-acre Port of Port Angeles property is being cleared for new marine development.
