PORTLAND, Ore. — A new proposal from Commissioner Dan Saltzman would allow Portland renters more time to prepare for an eviction or significant rent hike.

The Oregonian reports Saltzman announced his plan Wednesday, which would ensure renters receive a 90-day notice for no-cause evictions and rent increases greater than 10 percent over a one-year period.

Currently, short-term renters are only required to receive a 30-day notice and renters who have been in their units for more than a year are granted 60 days. All rent increases can go into effect after 30 days.

Saltzman’s proposal announcement came just a day after affordable-housing advocates attended a Portland rally calling for more notice for renters and a one-year suspension of no-cause evictions.

The Portland City Council will review Saltzman’s proposal in October.
