Poppies: Millions of red crepe paper poppies are handmade every year by veterans and distributed across the country by American Legion Auxiliary and Legion members in exchange for donations totaling more than $2 million a year. The American Legion Auxiliary of Mountlake Terrace will be at local grocery stores throughout May with the flowers to collect donations. The national poppy program began in 1924 as a way to remember soldiers killed in World War I. The flower is now a widely recognized symbol of the sacrifice made by the men and women who have served and died during a time of war. Memorial Day is May 30. The Mountlake Terrace Auxiliary meets at 7 p.m. second Mondays at Vineyard Park Retirement Community, 23008 56th Ave. W.
