BOISE — The Everett AquaSox snapped a two-game losing streak as they defeated the Boise Hawks 9-5 before 2,732 fans at Memorial Stadium.
Everett (9-9 second half, 26-30 overall) scored the game’s first four runs and never trailed en route to moving back to the .500 mark in the second half of the season.
Everett’s Michael Suarez (7-2) earned the win as he scattered six hits and two walks while fanning one and allowed two runs in five innings.
The AquaSox pounded out 16 hits as reigning Northwest League Player of the Month Eugene Helder led the way with four. Onil Pena added three hits including a home run, while Chris Torres, Johnny Adams, Greifer Andrade and Austin Grebeck each had a pair of hits.
The AquaSox took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Andrade’s double scored Helder, and Louis Boyd’s sacrifice fly plated Adams. Everett pushed it to 4-0 in the top of the fourth when Grebeck singled in Pena, and Troy Dixon came home on a balk.
Boise got one back in the bottom of the fourth when J.B. Moss scored on a groundout by Luis Castro.
But the AquaSox answered with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Andrade and an RBI groundout from Boyd. Everett added two more in the eighth with RBI singles by Torres and Helder to push the lead to 8-2.
The Hawks made it interesting as they scored once in the fifth and three times in the eighth with a pair of homers, but Pena’s solo homer in the top of the ninth provided the final run.
The teams resume their series at 6:15 p.m. Monday.
