Everett wants more details about Uber, Lyft rule concerns

EVERETT — The city of Everett’s tussle with Lyft and Uber isn’t over.

Mayor Ray Stephanson on Wednesday sent the ride-share companies a letter asking them to put into writing their concerns over proposed regulations.

Last week, Lyft and Uber briefly canceled services in Everett. The timing coincided with the deadline for a grace period for the city’s new rules. The companies resumed service Sept. 1, after Everett decided to extend the grace period for further City Council review.

The rules require ride-share drivers to seek a business license and for their employers to conduct criminal background checks. Each company needs a license to operate in Everett. There also are provisions about vehicle inspections. The ordinances had been approved by the council in June.

Stephanson said the companies have not made clear what they would like to see changed. He said he hopes a resolution can be found that works for everyone. The Daily Herald obtained a copy of the mayor’s letter under state public records laws.
