Man gets 19 years in prison for Bothell-area murder

EVERETT — A Seattle man has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for a fatal shooting near Bothell in December 2016.

Jesse Randall Ackerman, 23, was sentenced Tuesday in Snohomish County Superior Court.

A jury in October found him guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Ryan Osborne. Ackerman had claimed the killing was in self-defense.

The prison term imposed by Judge Millie Judge was at the middle of the range under state sentencing guidelines.

It was the punishment requested by prosecutors.

“A number cannot be placed on a life. Not on Ryan’s life. Not on the defendant’s life. No matter what sentence this court ultimately imposes, it does not bring Ryan back,” deputy prosecutor Robert Grant said in court papers filed in support of the recommendation.

Public defender Natalie Tarantino urged the judge to find legal grounds for a sentence of no more than 10 years. Her sentencing memo again focused attention on details that the defense had argued pointed to Ackerman shooting to protect himself from an alleged attack.

A 10-year sentence “serves as serious punishment but takes into account the unique facts in the case that the standard sentence range does not,” Tarantino wrote.

Osborne, 36, died in the street outside his Bothell-area home. Ackerman had been in the neighborhood using heroin with a friend and was parked outside Osborne’s house.

Osborne’s family said he was shot when he went out to tap on the window of Ackerman’s car to ask him to leave.
