MOSES LAKE — The third-ranked Lake Stevens wrestling team scrapped and scrambled, but couldn’t make up enough ground in a 36-30 defeat at Moses Lake in a dual featuring the state’s most storied programs.

It came right down to the wire, as the No. 10 Chiefs held a 33-30 advantage over the Vikings entering the final bout of the evening at 145 pounds. Any kind of positive result for Lake Stevens would give the Vikings at least a tie, but Moses Lake’s Christien Knopp won a tight battle over Talon Tate 4-2.

Pins by Markus Johnson (113 pounds) and Kyle LaCoursiere (126) and a major decision by Clayton Brush (132) kept Lake Stevens in it. But the Vikings, without state champ Malachi Lawrence, just couldn’t get over the hump.
