7 years after fire, new gym opens at Sultan Boys & Girls Club

SULTAN — Seven years after a Christmas Eve fire gutted the former Boy & Girls Club here, the new space is finally complete.
When the new Sultan club opened in 2015, the $2 million project was missing one last piece: a full-size gymnasium.
The gym was recently finished, and dedicated during a celebration Wednesday. About 70 people attended.
The 8,000-square-foot gymnasium includes a regulation-size basketball court with six hoops. It’s a space for club sports or casual matches.
Club director Cherise Crawford thanked the community for its support and patience during the rebuild of the club and the addition of the gym.
“Good things come to those who wait and that statement rings true with our new gymnasium,” she said in a news release.
The gym was built on land owned by Volunteers of America Western Washington. The Volunteers of America, city of Sultan and Boys & Girls Club of Snohomish County worked together on the project, with funding from the state and county.
Dozens of local children go to the club regularly, and several hundred are expected to make use of the gym for practices, games and activities.
The Sultan Boys & Girls Club is meant to offer a safe place for kids before and after school and during breaks. It’s one of 24 clubs that serve thousands of children in the county.
