Plant of Merit: Hippeastrum ‘Elvas,’ amaryllis bulb

What: Hippeastrum “Elvas,” with the common name amaryllis, is one of the loveliest of the two-toned hybrids. This amaryllis has pure white petals that are splashed with rich raspberry strokes. The outer petals are layered, while the center petals are whorled. There is nothing quite like having an amaryllis in bloom inside the home during the winter. Their blooms are large, and the flower has a tropical appearance to it.

Where: Full sun to light shade, or bright light indoors.

Size: The “Elvas” bulb reaches 18 to 20 inches in height. The blooms are about 8 to 10 inches in diameter.

Care: These plants are top heavy and must be staked. They require moderate watering.
