AT A GLANCE
Regional wrestling tournaments
4A Region 1
Where: Cavalero Mid High School, Lake Stevens
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Teams: Wesco 4A and NPSL Olympic
To Mat Classic XXX: Top 4 at each weight
Enticing potential matchups: Three potential clashes are intriguing here, and all involve the host Vikings. At 106, Lake Stevens’ senior Jake Bennett (ranked second in 4A by Washington Wrestling Report) would have to beat Auburn Mountainview’s Marco Galeano (ranked third) in the final if both make it. The final at 120 pounds could be a rematch of last week’s sub-regional title bout between Glacier Peak’s Parker Hardy and Lake Stevens’ Kyle LaCoursiere. Hardy won a 3-o decision on his home mat last Saturday. The 182-pound bracket is also pretty stacked, with top-ranked Malachi Lawrence of Lake Stevens leading a group that includes Mariner’s Levi Weaver (No. 3) and Decatur’s Jake Cassaday (No. 4). Lawrence beat Weaver 10-6 to win sub-regionals last week, but Weaver would have to beat Cassaday in a semifinal for there to be a rematch this weekend.
3A Region 3
Where: Edmonds-Woodway High School
When: Friday, 5 p.m; Saturday 10 a.m.
Teams: Wesco 3A and Mid-Columbia 3A
To Mat Classic XXX: Top 4 at each weight
Enticing potential matchups: Washington Wrestling Report’s top 3 160-pounders in 3A will be in Edmonds this weekend, and if top-ranked Riley Van Scoy of Stanwood is going to advance as a regional champ, he’ll have to beat Southridge’s Mikael Failor (No. 3) in the semifinals and Kennewick’s Emilio Ramos (No. 2) in the final. Another weight to watch is 170, where Marysville Pilchuck sophomore Cayden White (ranked No. 7) would battle Southridge’s Mark Meier (No. 3) in the semifinals and Kamiakin’s Jacob Olson (No. 2) in the title bout.
2A Region 1
Where: Tumwater High School
When: Saturday, 9 a.m.
Teams: Cascade 2A (Granite Falls, Archbishop Murphy, Cedarcrest), Wesco 2A (Mountlake Terrace), Evergreen 2A, GSHL 2A
To Mat Classic XXX: Top 4 at each weight
Enticing potential matchups: The brackets for the Tumwater regional were not posted as of late Wednesday night, but there will be three ranked wrestlers in the 195-pound bracket including No. 8 Caleb Lay of Cedarcrest. He’ll have to beat out No. 4 Jacob Flanagan of Woodland, No. 11 Aaron Adamo of Centralia and No. 12 Trace Spath of the host Thunderbirds to emerge victorious.
1A Region 2
Where: Sultan High School
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Teams: Cascade 1A (Sultan, South Whidbey), Northwest 1A (Mount Baker, Nooksack Valley, Meridian), SCAC West
To Mat Classic XXX: Top 4 at each weight
Enticing potential matchups: Sultan coach Garth MacDicken is high on freshman 145-pounder Austin Byron, but the Alaska transfer would have to beat No. 4 Jake Cheney of Meridian in the semifinals and top-ranked Juan Isiordia of Granger in the finals to win his first regional.
2B/1B Region 1
Where: Kalama H.S.
When: Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
Teams: Northwest 2B/1B (Darrington, Friday Harbor, Concrete), 2B/1B South District
To Mat Classic XXX: Top 5 at each weight
Enticing potential matchup: Darrington’s Gage Burtenshaw and Adna’s Ashton Dowell have some history. Dowell beat Burtenshaw in last year’s regional final, but Burtenshaw rebounded to win a state title the following week. The two could meet yet again in Saturday’s final.
Girls Region 1
Where: At Sedro-Woolley H.S.
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Teams: District 1 in all classifications
To Mat Classic XXX: Top 4 at each weight
Enticing potential matchup: Kamiak’s Diana Cantini and Mount Vernon’s Kaylee Gaines battled it out in one of the highlight matches at last weekend’s sub-regional at Bellingham, with Gaines coming out on top via pinfall at 105 pounds. Cantini has what it takes to flip the script at regionals.
