Teens to spend summer break researching cancer cure

Nine Snohomish County teens are among 30 area students who will spend part of their summers researching cures for cancer after being accepted to two-week paid internships with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. The Explorers program, funded by the National Cancer Institute, gives students hands-on activities in training labs, a chance to work with research scientists, and look at steps to obtain their own career in biomedical research.

Local students accepted to the program: Colter Mason and Cameron Davis, both Everett High juniors; Karsten Schmidt, a Glacier Peak High School sophomore; Alberta Gbla, Amber Carbajal, Marlene Barajas Salas, Nina Huynh and Portia Forson, all juniors at Mariner High School; and Ethan Wood, a junior at Mountlake Terrace High School.
