Karam Dana, an assistant professor in the University of Washington Bothell School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, has received the campus’ Distinguished Teaching Award, one of the university’s highest honors. The award comes with a $5,000 honorarium.

Dana joined UW Bothell in 2012 and is director of the American Muslim Research Institute. Courses he has taught include “Middle East Politics,” “Islam and Muslims in Western Contexts,” “U.S. Foreign Policy” and “Approaches to Social Research.” “I strive to foster empathy as well as discovery,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jane Van Galen, founding director of the UW Bothell education program, received the 2018 UW Distinguished Teaching Award for Innovation with Technology for her work on programs that aim to teach young students to be critical consumers of information, for digital storytelling lessons, and digital learning workshops, among other tech-focused roles.
