Poppies in Lake Stevens
Lake Stevens American Legion Post 181, along with the Women’s Auxiliary Unit 181 and Scouts from Troop/Pack 42, will give away silk poppies from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at various local businesses. The poppies were handmade by disabled veterans and purchased by the local American Legion Post. Donations will be accepted for local veterans and veterans-related programs.
Locations include the downtown area, Frontier Village, near Tom Thumb at the south end of town, or at the Walmart off Highway 9.
Forks and knives up
It’s family chicken dinner time. The monthly meal is served noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Stillaguamish Senior Center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd., Arlington. Roasted chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, coleslaw, roll, drink and a pudding dessert for $9 general, $8 for seniors, $5 for children younger than 12. Take-out is available. Proceeds benefit senior center programs. Enjoy entertainment, too.

Let’s cruise, baby
The annual Cruzin’ to Colby Car Show is back again Memorial Day weekend, Sunday and Monday, in downtown Everett. The weekend will include a controlled cruise, car show and dance Sunday night at Tony V’s Garage.

Food and shelter grants
The Snohomish County Emergency Food and Shelter Board is accepting applications for federal grant money to support emergency shelter and emergency food programs in Snohomish County. Funds will be awarded directly to nonprofit and government agencies only, which must meet certain requirements, such as a nondiscrimination policy. Deadline to apply is June 1.

School board opening
The Granite Falls School Board is looking to fill Position 4, recently vacated when Tom Eadie stepped down after eight years. Applications are being accepted until June 12. Applicants must be a registered voter, able to attend school board meetings and other commitments, and live in District 4. A letter of interest and description of qualifications should be sent to Linda Hall at 205 N. Alder Ave, Granite Falls, WA, 98252, or emailed to mfreeman@gfalls.wednet.edu.

Service changes for Memorial Day
Local transit services will operate on Sunday schedules for the Memorial Day holiday Monday. Commuter routes to Seattle will not run.
Waste haulers will pick up garbage, recyclables and yard waste as usual. That includes Rubatino Refuse Removal, Republic Services and Waste Management.
