Youth triathlons returning to Monroe

Monroe will play host to a series of triathlons for athletes ages 13-19 on Saturday, as over 200 youth and junior elite triathletes from eight states will attempt to qualify for the 2018 USA Triathlon Youth & Junior Elite Nationals in August.

TriMonroe Triathlon will feature 13-15-year-old boys and girls competing in Super Sprint triathlons at 7:30 and 8:30 Saturday morning, with thosee events consisting of 375-meter swims, 9-kilometer bike rides and 2.5-kilometer runs.

The 16-19-year-old male and female athletes will compete in Sprint events at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday, which include 750-meter swims, 10.5-kilometer bike rides and a 5-kilometer run.

An awards ceremony for all divisions will follow the final race.

All of the events will be contested on Lake Tye and in the Fryelands Boulevard area of Monroe, and will serve as qualifiers for national events set for Aug. 4-5 in West Chester, Ohio.

“USA Triathlon is thrilled to be back in Snohomish County and the city of Monroe for TriMonroe 2018,” USA Triathlon Junior/U-23 program manager Steve Kelley said Tuesday in a Snohomish County Sports Commission press release. “This is among the best venues available to us anywhere in the United States for Olympic development triathlon. Past competitors on this course have gone on to win Pan American and world championships, so we know it’s a great proving ground for our up-and-coming talent.”

Athletes from Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois, California, Oregon and Washingon are expected to take part in Saturday’s events.

The public is welcome to attend the event free of charge.
