STANWOOD — A fiery crash left one driver dead Wednesday east of Stanwood.

Two vehicles collided around 11 a.m. at 28th Avenue NW and 268th Street NW, between Stanwood and I-5, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. One vehicle — believed a Toyota RAV4 — rolled off of the road into a grove of trees and caught fire. The driver died.

Deputies suspected the deceased driver might have failed to brake for a stop sign, sheriff’s spokeswoman Courtney O’Keefe said. They were still investigating at the scene.

The driver of the other car, a red Subaru Outback, suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening. She was transported from the scene in an ambulance. Neither vehicle had passengers.

Nearby roads were shut down.
