The Snohomish Conservation District and city of Lake Stevens awarded the first annual Cascade Garden Awards at an Oct. 6 State of the Lake event.

The awards celebrate homeowners who have created beauty and visual appeal with their landscaping.

Karl Slomchinski, a Snohomish County Master Gardener, was the 2018 winner for his lake-friendly gardening, including chemical-free yard care and composting and use of native and drought-tolerant plants. Additionally, in the last year he adopted a swale in the right-of-way in front of his house that he’s restored with mulch and thousands of plants.

Mary Fox and Darlene Joy Brawford were finalists.

The event also included presentations on such topics as the science of the lake’s health and practical ways homeowners can help.
