Lynnwood elementary teacher wins stewardship award

Teacher Jennie Warmouth of Spruce Elementary School in Lynnwood was one of three 2018 recipients of the Patsy Collins Award for Excellence in Education, Environment, and Community from IslandWood and the Seattle Foundation.
The award comes with a $10,000 cash prize and recognizes teachers for “innovative approaches that connect learning with students’ lives and communities to foster environmental awareness and stewardship behaviors.”
Since 2004, Warmouth has been teaching her students to write online adoption advertisements for homeless dogs and cats awaiting adoption at the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Lynnwood. Most recently, her second- and third-grade students advocated for the humane treatment of live butterflies used in their school district’s life sciences lessons.
“They are motivated toward compassionate action and stewardship that extends beyond the four walls of our classroom,” she said.
Warmouth serves on the PAWS board, is an adjunct professor at Seattle Pacific University, is a research consultant for Woodland Park Zoo, and wrote a children’s book with proceeds benefiting a scholarship program.
