Short films: Filmmakers are invited to submit noir-inspired short films of five minutes or less to the Whidbey Island Film Festival’s ShortsFest. Sunday Films at the Library: “Bad Lucky Goat” is showing at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 at Everett’s main library, 2702 Hoyt Ave., Everett. After accidentally killing a bearded goat with their father’s truck, two incompatible teenage siblings embark on a journey of reconciliation. Not rated. Adult content. In Creole with English subtitles. 76 minutes. Free.
Everett Meaningful Movies: “The Economics of Happiness,” is showing at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at Everett United Church of Christ, 2624 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. The film describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re‐regulation of trade and finance — and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Maltby Meaningful Movies: “Reinventing Power,” which takes a look at ways that clean, cheap and renewable power can help to clean the air and to provide family jobs, is showing at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Sharingwood Association, 22105 East Lost Lake Road, Snohomish.
Sno-King Meaningful Movies: “Chasing Coral” is showing at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 8109 224 St. SW, Edmonds. Coral reefs are the nursery for all life in the oceans. Yet with carbon emissions warming the seas, a phenomenon called “coral bleaching” — a sign of mass coral death — has been accelerating around the world. The film took more than three years to shoot and is the result of 500-plus hours of underwater footage. More at www.meaningfulmovies.org.
Edmonds Center for the Arts Film Cabaret Series: “Crazy Heart,” a 2009 movie with Jeff Bridges as a down-and-out songwriter who tries to turn his life around after beginning a relationship with a young journalist, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Edmonds Diversity Film Series: Six free screenings of topical films on themes related to diversity, inclusion and equity on third Saturdays at noon at the Edmonds Theater, 415 Main St., Edmonds.
